Howdy all!

Our August F5J contest was held on Sunday the 11th at Scott Edwards’ airstrip. Results are on F3X Vault at this link:

I will post photos on the Montana ALES RCG thread.

This month we had a new face in the crowd. Luke Waters drove up from Jackson, WY to fly with us. Luke was a terrific addition to the usual group. He is easing back into RC soaring after being a competitive pilot as a teenager. Ours was his first contest since the 2001 NATS!As it turns out, he is a very accomplished sailplane pilot, and handily won the event. Luke also flies full scale and has done a lot of full scale instruction. Welcome Luke!

The day started out fairly calm, but after the first couple rounds the wind really started to kick in. Strong gusty conditions made landing especially challenging. By round 4 many pilots were flying with ballast. We decided to bunch it after completing 5 rounds due to the dangerous conditions. No need to loose any airplanes! The drop kicked in after round 5.

Luke gets the Jon Garber award for the day. In round 4 his motor quit on launch when he tried to adjust the throttle! He was quite low, maybe 30 meters, but was able to hook up and take it out for his max. Great flying and very exciting! Scott Edwards had battery trouble in round 1, and the airplane lost signal. Fortunately, the U2 Standard continued on course and landed neatly in a large sumac bush, narrowly missing a fence and huge sandstone boulder in the process. The model was retrieved and no damage was apparent. Yay!

Until next time, "keep the fuselage level!"

Carl
