Subject: Airport Update - Temporary Flight Restriction South of Airport
Importance: High

A temporary flight restriction was issued today and amended this afternoon. The amended TFR places it just South of the airport facility, which will continue to provide a safe area for aerial firefighting on the Holmes Gulch Fire, but still
allow VFR and IFR traffic to use the airport. The Tower may restrict some activities such as touch-and-go’s, practice approaches depending on the level of air traffic and the firefighting situation South of town. Currently there are 7 fixed wing tankers operating
out of the USFS Tanker Base, along with numerous air attack/management/lead planes and helicopters operated by DNRC, Montana Army National Guard, and private contractors. They are going to fires all over our region, not just the local fire.

The Tower staff has done an excellent job in my opinion of handling a huge amount of traffic recently, so we hats off to them. In addition to fire aircraft, we have had military, general/corporate aviation, air ambulance, airlines (even
an airline diversion today as a C-130 with a flat tire tied up the runway in Great Falls) and all sorts of other aircraft through here recently. Yesterday there were over 335 tower operations which is record levels for Helena. I’m sure the final count today
will be equally high.
