We had a terrific day of flying at Scott’s field near Columbus today. Many thanks to Scott for his work to prepare the field for the event. It was freshly mown and in great shape!

For the first 4 rounds the air was quite still, with barely a breeze from the west. While buoyancy could be found, there were no good thermals. Interestingly, there was some small thermal activity down on the deck, allowing a couple pilots to extend and make times in the early rounds. About the beginning of round 5 the wind switched to easterly, as forecast, and picked up gradually. A couple strong shifts to south wind were observed. Although the temperatures were in the mid 80s, large lift did not develop, and BIG sink was parked over the field, making landings tricky. Great contest conditions!

Congratulations to Steve Owen. Steve has been flying string launched (what’s that!!?) gliders for some time but is brand new to electrics. On his first time flying in Columbus he delivered a respectable third place. ;^ ) How to be Steve and welcome to ALES! It was also great to see John Poulson out flying. John always brings a lot to the party, and the bantering between he and Dick is a comedy act in itself! Thanks for coming out John. Thanks also to Wayne for making the trip from Helena.

Final scores attached. Next contest in Columbus will be July 14. BFM Annual Fly In is June 23 & 24, and all HFT members are welcome. This is always a fun event.

Carl
